Tools and Languages for Critical Systems

Over the last decade or so, a good deal of effort has been put into the development of software engineering tools, and both CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering) and, to a lesser extent, IPSEs (Integrated Project Support Environments) have received a good deal of attention. Although the tools used by many designers and programmers building business applications have changed significantly, much less change has been visible in engineering applications. This appears to be due to the investment required to build a useful, reliable set of tools and to train staff to use them to good effect. In the case of critical systems, in particular, the problem also arises of the extent to which such tools (including compilers) can be trusted.
